How We Communicate Matters

Chief Executive Officer, VMSC EMS

Elected officials are responsible for solving problems with limited resources. If the message they continually hear is that EMS is broken, unaffordable, or unsustainable, they will naturally begin looking at alternatives. Consolidation, regionalization, or privatization become part of the conversation, whether we intended that or not.

Our responsibility as leaders is to frame the conversation differently.

Lead with the value EMS delivers. Demonstrate measurable outcomes. Explain the cost of readiness, not just the cost of response. Show how investing in EMS strengthens healthcare, improves community resilience, and protects the people we serve.

Fear creates urgency. Leadership creates confidence.

As EMS leaders, our goal shouldn’t simply be to convince people that we need funding. It should be to convince them that investing in their EMS system is the smartest solution for their community.

The conversation we shape today may very well determine the system we’re leading tomorrow.
